I definitely wanted Elaine to be middle-aged and out of the likely dating pool, because I like the idea of her being motherly and of a different generation while being completely in tune with the needs of the younger generation. Who knows, maybe she has a daughter who keeps her up-to-date, but I don't even think that's needed. She clearly takes her profession very seriously, with the books and photos and style ideas.
As for Heather, I think the reason for her discomfort will be found more in her story (Entanglement, chapters 3-4) than anything in Mentor. Had it been any of the other women she'd probably have shrugged it off by now, but Heather gets embarrassed so easily.
